    Safety switches are used to open and close a circuit as a disconnecting means for service entrance or to facilitate lock-out/tag-out procedures for motors and other critical power systems equipment. An RCD is a Residual Current Device, also called a safety switch. They constantly monitor the electrical current flowing through circuits supplying electricity to devices and appliances. A fault in this flow can occur from wires being damaged which can cause surges in electricity and be fatal.

    The main difference between a safety switch (or RCD) and a circuit breaker (often referred to as a fuse) is a safety switch protects people from electrical accidents and the circuit breaker protects wiring and electrical systems in your home. Safety switches have been compulsory on all. Safety switches must also be fitted to all power point circuits when a new electrical installations occurs, such as a general power outlet (GPO).

    A safety switch is designed to protect people from leaking current from circuits, so when a safety switch ‘trips’, it disconnects the power to that circuit to ensure the safety of those potentially in harm’s way. When looking for the safety switch that has been affected, you should find it in the off position also known as the “O” position. If you cannot find any devices in the “O” position, you may have a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.
