A Displacement Sensor measures and detects changes (displacement) in a physical quantity. The Sensor can measure the height, width, and thickness of an object by determining the amount of displacement of that object. A Measurement Sensor measures the position and dimensions of an object. A displacement sensor is a device used for measuring positional movement or detecting the movement of a given object, these movements can be in either a linear or rotary fashion. Displacement sensors, also known as position sensors, are a very common type of sensor.

Inductive sensors (eddy current) for displacement, distance & position. Eddy current sensors from Micro-Epsilon are designed for non-contact measurement of displacement, distance, position, oscillation and vibrations. Displacement Sensors are available in various types; the two main types are rotary displacement sensors and linear displacement sensors. Linear and rotary can be split further based on the technology they use. Capacitive displacement sensors “are non-contact devices capable of high-resolution measurement of the position and/or change of position of any conductive target”. They are also able to measure the thickness or density of non-conductive materials.

Aerospace applications – satellites, drones, space vehicles and flight simulators all have a requirement for movement to be measured and therefore displacement sensors are required. Hydraulics – sensors in these applications usually need to be resistant to shock and vibration due to the nature of the industry. The sensor is capable of measuring vibration amplitudes ranging from 0.008 to 0.74 mm within a frequency range of 75 to 275 Hz.
