The process pump is a centrifugal pump which is used in chemical processes, e.g. in oil refineries and the petrochemical industry (see Refinery pump). Its design is generally of the back pull-out type. Like chemical pumps, process pumps are used for handling aggressive chemical fluids. A pump produces liquid movement or flow: it does not generate pressure. It produces the flow necessary for the development of pressure which is a function of resistance to fluid flow in the system.

a device that raises, transfers, delivers, or compresses fluids or that attenuates gases especially by suction or pressure or both. : heart. 3. : an act or the process of pumping. Pumping power is calculated as the volume of the fluid per unit time (flow capacity) times the density of the fluid times the gravitational constant times the pumping head (vertical distance to be pumped). Pumping energy is simply power multiplied across time. 100kW of power for one hour is 100kWh of energy.

Pump efficiency is defined as the ratio of useful hydraulic power delivered to the fluid to the power input at the drive shaft. Pumps typically consist of three main parts: a housing, an impeller, and a motor. The housing is the pump’s mainframe, which supports the impeller and contains the pumped fluid. The impeller is a rotating set of blades that helps move the fluid through the pump.
