Our Bulletin 42BC Long-range Background Suppression Sensors offer high background suppression performance at sensing ranges up to 2 m (6.6 ft). This sensing capability fits applications where standard transmitted beam or retro-reflective sensing is not practical due to lack of easy access to both sides of the target or when economics is a major factor.Long range background suppression diffuse sensing mode Adjustable range settingsSlim housing style Highly visible status Indicators Screw terminal connections Both NPN and PNP outputs (DC)SPST relay output (AC) Short-circuit protected outputs

The background suppression sensor is a diffused mode photoelectric that uses separate sensing elements to detect objects close together without detecting the background material. Its sensing range for black is just 5% less than its range for white targets, and it can operate at a variable distance. Diffused with background suppression: Diffused sensors with background suppression sensors have a defined sensing range for any object regardless of color, reflectivity or finish. They are able to detect dark objects placed directly on shiny backgrounds and can be easily installed and adjusted.

The basic principal behind background suppression is triangulation. An LED transmits light through a lens in a straight line toward the target. The target reflects light back to the receiver lens and elements (E1 and E2 in figure 3) at some angle.
