A clamp meter is a clothespin-shaped instrument that can be clamped around a live wire in order to measure the current it’s carrying. As a measurement principle, clamp meters detect the magnetic field emitted by current flowing in a wire in order to measure the current value. Clamps are versatile tools that serve to temporarily hold work securely in place. They are used for many applications including carpentry, woodworking, furniture making, welding, construction and metal working.
A current clamp is used to measure current in scenarios where splitting the circuit with a digital multimeter isn’t possible or where the current in the electrical power supply system is so high that a contact current measurement is unsafe. A clamp meter is one kind of test equipment and it is also known as Tong Tester. This equipment is very simple to use and operate. The main function of this device is to measure a live conductor in the circuit without damage or power loss.
Some models can be used for power measurement by measuring voltage and current. Energy demand monitoring can also be conducted with some models. Many instruments also include other basic multimeter functions, such as voltage, resistance and continuity, and temperature measurement.
