Hex nuts are six sided general purpose nut with internal screw threads. Hex nuts are one of the most common hexagonal fastener with internal threads that screws on to the shank of a hex head cap screw or other bolts. Hex jam nuts, heavy hex nuts, and lock nuts are just a few types of hex nuts we carry. Hex nut size refers to its nominal thread diameter. Typically, sizes range from 1/4″ to about 2 1/2″. Size is specified in inches, usually fractional rather than decimal. The term “hex nut” refers to any nut with a hexagonal shape. Jam nuts have a hexagonal shape, so they are considered a type of hex nut. But jam nuts are designed specifically to press or jam against another, standard nut. Nuts can loosen.
Hex jam nuts have two common applications. A jam nut can be threaded onto a bolt and run tight against the standard nut which will lock the nut in place and prevent it from backing off. Jam nuts are sometimes used for leveling purposes as well. The hexagon nuts must be marked with an indentation on the bearing surface or on the side or by embossing on the chamfer. Embossed markings must not protrude beyond the bearing surface of the nut.
Jam nuts, also known aptly as thin nuts, are low profile hex nuts about 2/3rd the thickness of a standard hex finish nut. High Corrosion Resistant Hexagon Nuts are strong options for applications that cause fasteners to be prone to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion and erosion. Hex is short for hexagon, referencing the six sides of the nut. These nuts feature internal threading and are commonly used with machine thread bolts and screws, in applications where no “locking” mechanism is required.
