Versions as solid shaft with clamp/synchro flange or as hollow shaft Resolution 2 to 10,000 pulses Cable entry for axial and radial use High protection rating for the requirements of harsh industrial environments Incremental encoders generate a precisely defined number of pulses per revolution. They are a measure of the angular or linear distance moved. Absolute encoders provide an absolute numerical value for each angular position even over several revolutions.

An Incremental encoder is electro-mechanical, it works by transforming the angular position of the shaft into digital or pulse signals using an optical disk. A certain number of pulses are generated per revolution and each pulse is an increment corresponding to the defined resolution. Below is a brief explanation of the three major output types for incremental encoders: TTL, HTL, Open Collector.

An absolute encoder can tell you the exact position of the shaft in its rotation at any given time (and how many rotations have transpired on a multi-turn absolute encoder). An incremental encoder can only report a change in position.
