Commonly found in power transmission applications, shaft collars are ring-shaped plastic or metal devices that clamp around a shaft. The purpose of the collar is usually to hold motor components, gear assemblies, sprockets, bearings, and other parts in place and sometimes facilitate their proper movement. The shaft collar is a simple, yet important, machine component found in many power transmission applications, most notably motors and gearboxes. The collars are used asmechanical stops, locating components, and bearing faces. The simple design lends itself to easy installation.

Friction between the rubber collar and steel shaft keeps wheels and gears from sliding in place during assembly and operation. Shaft collars consist of the uppermost portion of the shaft and act as a protective barrier to prevent water and soil from entering the shaft. There are several types of collars. The three basic types are flat, standing, and rolled.

Footstep or pivot bearing – The loading shaft is vertical and the end of the shaft rests within the bearing. Collar bearing – The shaft continues through the bearing. The shaft may be vertical or horizontal with a single collar or many collars. Collars — another type of falsework — are metal bands that fit around finished columns. They are used to support the forms needed to construct caps. The friction between the concrete and the bands holds them in place.
