Reed switch is used to activate the magnet mode in pacemaker / ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator). It is basically a collection of two strips of magnetic material enclosed in a glass capsule. Application of a magnetic field closes the switch by making contact between the two metal strips. A magnetic Reed Switch is inherently immune to mechanical wear. A unique characteristic of magnetic reed sensors, or switches, is their capability to support high-speed switching applications without mechanical wear.

SMC offers a variety of auto switches for actuators and air grippers. Reed and solid state switches are available in a general purpose type or with 2-color indication, which allows the optimum operating position to be determined by the color of the light. Reed switches actuated by magnets are commonly used in mechanical systems as proximity sensors. Examples are door and window sensors in burglar alarm systems and tamperproofing methods.

Reed switches have been used in laptops to put the laptop into sleep/hibernation mode when the lid is closed. A reed switch is an electromagnetic switch used to control the flow of electricity in a circuit. They are made from two or more ferrous reeds encased within a small glass tube-like envelope, which become magnetised and move together or separate when a magnetic field is moved towards the switch.
