Mild steel hollow sections, also known as structural steel tube or hollow structural sections, is a type of steel that is formed into a hollow tubular section. Square Hollow Sections, more frequently referred to by their acronym SHS, act as kind of a ‘middle of the road’ choice amongst Rectangular Hollow Sections and Circular Hollow Sections in terms of functionality and attributes. SHS has a flat surface, similarly to RHS, encompassing the entire outer rim.
The term Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) refers to high-strength welded steel tubing used as structural elements in buildings and other structures and a variety of manufactured products. It is produced in round, square and rectangular shapes and a broad range of sizes to the ASTM A500, A1085, and A1065 specifications.
Also referred to as Box Steel, Square Steel, Tube Steel or Rectangular Steel tube. Hollow Section can be Square or Rectangular with, as the name indicates, a hollow core and is available in either painted black steel (AS1163/C350LO) or Duragal.
