Unmanaged switches simply allow Ethernet devices to communicate with one another by providing a connection to the network. Unmanaged switches are truly plug and play devices, meaning you simply have to plug them in for them to work. This simplicity does come at a cost of higher functionality. Unmanaged switches are plug and play devices without the need of a complex setup. These switches allow Ethernet devices to communicate with one another (such as a PC or network printer) by providing a connection to the network and passing on information to where it needs to go.

An ethernet switch connects devices on a network to ensure the data arrives at its destination. The network switch may include ports for 5, 8, 12, 16, 24 or 28 devices, whereas corporate ethernet switches may commonly offer between 32 and 128 connections. Unmanaged switches do not have any management features such as configuration, monitoring and troubleshooting tools. They have multiple ports on them. Each port is connected to a device such as a computer or printer using an Ethernet cable.

The device that you connect to a switch port is called a host or host device. Unmanaged switches, on the whole, have very basic security. They’re secured by ensuring you have no vulnerabilities from system to system, which accessories like a lockable port cover can ensure no-one is tampering with the device directly.
